Unplanned Pregnancy: Take a Moment to Breathe (Selah)
An Unplanned Pregnancy Can Feel Overwhelming
An unplanned pregnancy can be a tipping point in an already complicated situation. It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed when facing such a significant life change. You may be asking yourself questions like: How will I manage work and child care? How can I afford a baby when I’m already struggling financially? What if my relationship is already under stress?
So many worries. So many questions.
The truth is, you are not alone. Every person who experiences a pregnancy—whether planned or unplanned—goes through a period of adjustment. Add changing hormones to the mix, and, understandably, your emotions may feel overwhelming. In the Bible, a musical pause for reflection is called a Selah. Sometimes, the healthiest thing you can do is simply pause.
Take a Moment to Breathe
When you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, your mind may be racing with emotions and uncertainty. Before making any major decisions, permit yourself to slow down.
Take a deep breath.
Pray.
Meditate.
Drink some water.
Take another breath.
Stop scrolling for a few moments and allow yourself time to process what you’re feeling. Your brain often protects you by handling difficult news one step at a time, and that’s okay. You don’t have to have every answer today.
Giving yourself space to pause doesn’t mean you’re avoiding reality—it means you’re preparing to make thoughtful, informed decisions instead of reacting out of fear.
Finding Support and Resources
Now that you’ve had a moment to breathe, let’s look at the facts.
There are resources available to help you through an unplanned pregnancy. Start by making a list of the things you would need to feel supported, such as safe housing, financial assistance, transportation, counseling, medical care, or baby supplies.
Then ask yourself:
- Can my family help?
- Can trusted friends support me?
- Is my church able to assist?
- Are there community or county programs available?
You may be surprised by how many resources already exist. Every need you can check off your list can help you feel more confident and less overwhelmed.
If you need someone to talk with, don’t hesitate to reach out to a local pregnancy resource center, your healthcare provider, a counselor, or a trusted friend. You don’t have to carry this burden alone. Keep reaching out until you feel supported and confident in making decisions that are healthy for you.
