Early Pregnancy Symptoms: What’s Normal in the First Few Weeks

If you suspect you might be pregnant, you may be wondering about early pregnancy symptoms and what’s considered normal. You may feel worried or even a little anxious about what your body is experiencing. Every woman is different, and early pregnancy symptoms can vary widely from person to person. Some notice changes very early, while others barely notice anything until several weeks later.
Here’s some clear information about the most common early pregnancy symptoms, so you can better understand what your body might be telling you.
The Most Common Early Pregnancy Symptoms
Missed period. This is usually the earliest and most well-known sign. If your cycles are typically regular and your period is more than a week late, it could be an indication of pregnancy. However, if your cycles are irregular, this sign alone isn’t conclusive.
Breast tenderness or changes. It’s common to notice that your breasts feel more sensitive, swollen, or heavy, sometimes as early as one to two weeks after conception. This is due to the hormonal changes your body begins to experience.
Fatigue. Feeling more tired than usual, even after a full night’s sleep, is very normal in the early weeks. Your body is working hard to support the pregnancy.
Nausea. commonly known as “morning sickness,” can actually occur at any time of day, not just in the morning. According to the American Pregnancy Association, nausea typically begins around week six, though this varies from woman to woman.
Light bleeding or spotting. Some women notice light, pink, or brown spotting 6 to 12 days after conception. This happens during implantation and is typically different from a normal period.
Frequent urination. As the uterus grows, it can put pressure on the bladder, increasing the need to urinate more often.
Mild lower abdominal discomfort. You may feel mild discomfort, similar to menstrual cramps, caused by early changes in the uterus.
Is It Normal to Have No Pregnancy Symptoms?
Yes. Some women don’t experience noticeable symptoms until later on, or may not notice any changes at all. The absence of symptoms doesn’t mean something is wrong.
How to Confirm Early Signs of Pregnancy
Because many of these symptoms can also resemble PMS, the only way to confirm a pregnancy is through a pregnancy test, ideally followed by a visit with a healthcare provider.
